Young dog lover up for Crufts award

Thursday March 6th 2014

A caring 11-year-old dog owner is in the running for a special award to be presented at Crufts 2014 on Sunday.

Caitlin Channon, from Exeter, is up for the Young Kennel Club's Shaun McAlpine Outstanding Young Person Award, alongside 14 other dog-loving youngsters.

The award was set up by the Young Kennel Club to honour the inspiring efforts of young people who improve the lives of dogs.

Caitlin has spent her weekends learning how to show dogs from her godmother and now has one of her own. She looks after the family dogs, goes to school as well as caring for her disabled mum.

She is a kind carer at home with her mum and with the dogs, according to the person who nominated her, Trudi Conibere. Many dog-lovers like Caitlin like to make sure their canines are covered by Pet Insurance to pay for the best in veterinary treatment.

Ed and Cindy McAlpine have presented the Shaun McAlpine Trophy at Crufts for around three decades in memory of their son Shaun. The successful dog handler died in a road accident in 1984 when he was 22.

Caitlin is among a final shortlist of 15 from 160 nominations from dog trainers, parents and schools. Crufts 2014 is held at Birmingham's NEC from this Thursday to Sunday.
