Work stress 'has never been higher'
Wednesday May 22nd 2013
Today's workers have never had it tougher and are more stressed by their job than they have been for a generation, government-backed research reveals.
People feel more under pressure than at any point in the last 25 years, according to the UK Commission for Employment and Skills.
This "intensification" of work affects millions, with two in five saying they are made to work at very high speed for at least three-quarters of their working life. Three-fifths also say their work day is dominated by having to meet "tight deadlines".
The statistics, from a survey which the commission has carried out every six years since 1986, show that workers' stress levels have never been higher.
The fear of losing their job has also never been higher, with as many as one in every four afraid of becoming unemployed amid the downturn sparked by the financial crash of 2007-08.
But according to the survey report, technology is to blame. It says that the birth of smartphones, for example, means many people find they are able to be contacted at any time of the day, whether they are actually at work or not.
Another key factor is the severity of the economic crisis and increased joblessness, the report says.
