Woman falls 30ft trying to save cat

Friday March 25th 2011

A teenager became stranded on a cliff ledge when she slid 30ft while trying to rescue her cat on the Isle of Wight.

The 18-year-old was helped from the ledge by Solent Coastguard rescue officers and a paramedic who were lowered to reach her and provide medical help.

The teenager, who fell while trying to reach the pet on the cliff at Atherfield Point, was pulled back up on a stretcher and taken to hospital.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the cat was also recovered safe and well. The coastguard was alerted by a 999 call.

Deputy watch manager Matthew West advised against members of the public attempting pet rescues on cliffs.

He said: "This woman was incredibly lucky to be rescued with relatively minor injuries. We know it's worrying when pets go missing but cliffs are dangerous places, particularly in the dark."
