Warning over regional pay move
Friday March 30th 2012
Research has suggested those working in the public sector could soon be faced with significantly reduced wages if they hold a position outside London and the South East.
A study by jobs website Adzuna.co.uk warned that public sector employees in the Midlands, the West Country and the North of England would be affected most by Government proposals to regionalise public sector pay rates.
Pay could be reduced by up to £5,000, or 17%, for those working in the Department for Work and Pensions or other Government departments, according to the report.
It said those in cities such as Leeds, Liverpool, Belfast and Cardiff would be hard hit.
Doug Monro, of Adzuna, said: "Workers will always be paid a premium where demand outstrips supply, but the changes could well affect the prosperity of the regions and lead to even more migration into an overcrowded London."
