Tortoises missing after car theft

Tuesday January 17th 2012

British Transport Police (BTP) have started an investigation after a vehicle was stolen from a train station car park - with two hibernating tortoises in the boot.

A green Mazda 325 car was taken from the long-stay car park at Lincoln Central, with the Greek variety male and Marginated female tortoises, both aged nine, sleeping in a blue plastic box in the boot.

BTP constable Kristene Mikkonen said: "As well as being valuable, the owner and I are concerned for the safety and well-being of the reptiles.

"I would appeal to anyone who has knowledge of their whereabouts or any information regarding those responsible for stealing the car to get in touch with BTP as a matter of urgency.

"Also, anyone who is offered tortoises in unusual circumstances should report it."
