TalkTalk call centre falls silent

Thursday April 26th 2012

A call from telecoms company TalkTalk, announcing job cuts affecting up to 390 employees, has left workers feeling cold.

While engineering jobs are being created within the company, 168 customer retention and sales workers at its Northampton call centre are set to lose theirs as the site is closed.

In moves to "simplify" the company's operation, around 70 staff in Preston and Warrington have been put on 90 days' notice according to the Communication Workers Union, which also claimed that it understood that there were plans to outsource the work overseas to India and Manila.

The union's deputy general secretary, Andy Kerr, explained that while news of engineering roles being created was "welcome", it was "unlikely that call centre staff affected by redundancies will be eligible for these roles."

He also revealed that "shellshocked" members had been asking for help and advice following the announcement, highlighting the security and peace of mind that Income Protection cover can provide.
