Sounds like cat's a record breaker
Wednesday May 13th 2015
Cat owners love to hear their cats purr but not necessarily at 67.8 decibels, the world record.
That's how loud Tracy Westwood's cat Merlin purrs, according to measurements taken by a team from the Guinness Book of Records.
Apparently 67.8 decibels is nearly as loud as the noises made by showers and dishwashers and it can be so loud that Ms Westwood, from Torquay, has to repeat herself when talking to other people when her cat is in the vicinity.
Merlin's purr is particularly loud when he is eating and she can even hear him over the sound of her hairdryer when she is using it, Ms Westwood says.
Merlin, who Ms Westwood took in as a kitten from a rescue centre, is to be featured on TV show Cats Make You Laugh Out Loud 2 on Channel 5.
The cat's purr was just under the record at first, but went over it when tucking into a dish of tuna, according to a Guinness Book of Records spokesman.
