Sehwag out after shoulder injury

Tuesday May 10th 2011

Cricketer Virender Sehwag has suffered a shoulder injury - bringing his Indian Premier League season to a premature end.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has only confirmed so far that he will not be featuring in the domestic Twenty20 tournament.

But the news, which underlines the need for comprehensive Sports Injury Insurance, also casts doubt over his place in the India line-up for the country's upcoming tour of England.

His IPL team, the Delhi Daredevils, suggested the 32-year-old will undergo surgery that could affect his chance of taking part in the tour.

"Sehwag's injured shoulder is definitely a concern for everyone," B Vanchi, director of GMR Sports - owners of the Daredevils - told the Times of India.

"The BCCI has decided that it needs surgery immediately and are making arrangements for him to travel to London."

That would certainly rule Sehwag out of the upcoming tour of the West Indies, which begins next month, and, with the first Test against England beginning on July 21, would at the very least hinder his preparations.

India are set to announce the squad for the West Indies tour, their first since the appointment of new coach Duncan Fletcher, on Friday.

Sehwag has been playing through the pain during this edition of the IPL, but his shoulder problems date back to 2009, when he also needed an operation.
