SeaFrance closure costs 130 jobs

Tuesday January 10th 2012

French ferry operator SeaFrance has gone into liquidation, making almost 130 UK-based staff redundant.

Staff on the Dover to Calais route, including office workers, check-in teams and those who help passengers board ships, are set to lose their jobs.

All the affected UK workers are based in Dover, Kent, where the ill-fated company operated its three ferries from until it ran into financial problems in November.

Hundreds of staff in France are also set to lose their jobs following the announcement.

Following failed attempts by SeaFrance employees to save the firm by setting up a worker co-operative, the liquidation was ordered by a French court on Monday.

After the news broke, a spokeswoman from the firm said that all UK customers would receive a refund.
