RBS job losses condemned by union
Wednesday May 25th 2011
Communities will be devastated by the loss of 700 jobs confirmed at three Royal Bank of Scotland sites, union leaders have warned.
The union Unite said 500 jobs will go at a Telford call centre which covered debt management and fraud operations, with another 150 jobs being axed in Plymouth and 40 in Leeds.
Many communities depend on these finance jobs, said Unite's national officer Dave Fleming, adding that the job loss announcements and site closures "are truly devastating news" for them.
"When RBS announced 3,500 job cuts in September 2010 there was utter disbelief about the scale of the cuts, and today we are seeing the human tragedy which this decision will result in. We must remember that behind each and every job loss there is a family tragedy and the consequences are often devastating.
"Unite is calling on the bank to do more to offer retraining and redeployment for the workforce, who will today be distraught by this news."
RBS said in a statement: "We announced last September that we would be reducing the number of centres we operate from, and that regrettably this would lead to job losses.
