Police force to lose 900 positions

Wednesday June 29th 2011

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is preparing to axe almost 900 jobs, it has been revealed.

The jobs will be lost as police chiefs look to save £134 million between now and 2015.

GMP staff attended meetings on June 28 at Bolton Wanderer's Reebok Arena to find out the full impact of the force's austerity measures.

With these job cuts in mind, now might be a good time for staff at GMP to make sure they have comprehensive Income Protection insurance in case the worst happens.

Areas set to be affected by this second phase of cuts will include the serious crime division, specialist operations, forensics, intelligence, communications and the serious crime division.

During this round of job losses a total of 616 police staff and 270 officer positions at GMP are expected to be lost from the current 12,000-strong workforce.

Previously, the force managed to save more than £30 million during the first round of cuts. GMP is now expecting to save almost £33 million for the second phase.
