Pets 'better than family'' for many

Monday September 27th 2010

Pets make people more happy than their family and friends, according to a new survey.

Some 43% said they thought they pet understood them better than their loved ones, with 24% saying they thought their cat or dog gave them more love with one in ten admitting to telling their pet their secrets.

A third (33%) believed their pet was more loyal than their family and friends and more than one in 10 (13%) said they spend more time looking after their pet than themselves.

A quarter (25%) are so proud of their dog or cat they have its picture as the screen saver or wallpaper on their computer and around one in seven (15%) have their pet as their Facebook profile picture.

The poll was carried out for Bayer Healthcare's worming treatment Drontal to launch its My Pet Superstar competition to search for the nation's Top Dog and Top Cat.

Television vet Emma Milne, who is one of the judges, said: "The joy and companionship our pets bring to our lives is unquestionable and it is no wonder that many consider them to be man's best friend."
