No.10 happy as Larry keeps cat post
Tuesday July 12th 2016
Larry the cat will outlast David Cameron at the Prime Minister's official residence when successor Theresa May takes over later this week. Downing Street staff are reportedly happy to keep the white-and-brown tabby as its mouse-catcher inside No.10.
Mrs May succeeds Mr Cameron as Conservative leader and Prime Minister on Wednesday (July 13). But Larry belongs to a civil servant rather than Mr Cameron and his family, so he will be retained.
Mr Cameron called Larry's addition to the household a "great" one when he joined from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home five years ago. He became the first permanent official de-mouser since Humphrey retired 14 years earlier.
Alistair Darling, the then chancellor, briefly lent his cat Sybil to No.10 in 2007, but she was taken back to Scotland after failing to settle in. Larry's acute "predatory drive" makes him a good mouse-catcher, according to reports.
He has even had a non-official Twitter account launched in his name. It tweeted on Monday (July 11) that Larry was on the look-out for a good groomer ahead of meeting Mrs May later in the week.
