Minis examined for steering flaws

Thursday September 30th 2010

Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) AG's Mini Cooper cars are being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in America amid concerns about power steering defects.

Several 2004 and 2005 models of the car have been the subject of complaints regarding unexpected steering loss, which could cause traffic accidents.

The criticism of the cars' steering features prompted the organisation to begin the investigation, which could encompass an estimated 80,000 cars across the country.

The latest blow to the German car manufacturer comes after another batch of cars was examined for steering defects a few months ago.

In July, the NHTSA opened an investigation into the BMW Z4's power steering following 107 complaints and one crash involving vehicles from the 2003 to 2005 models.

Drivers reported intermittent power-steering failure that technicians were unable to replicate, according to official reports.
