Love at first sight for pet owners

Thursday April 17th 2014

It was very much a case of love at first sight for the majority of pet owners.

Research by Purina, reported in the Irish Examiner, reveals two out of three were won over by their furry friend's first reaction to them.

Temperament is the main concern for 80% of owners when choosing a pet, while 67% claim it is important that the cat or dog fits in with the family.

Fun, meanwhile, is the main reason for having a pet, with 74% of owners of this opinion when welcoming an animal into the house. A further 70% cite love and affection, while 69% are after companionship.

The bond between owner and pet is a strong one. So strong, in fact, that 66% of people allow their dog or cat to sleep in the house rather than outside in the yard. Some 23% even let them kip in their bedroom.

But the pampering doesn't stop there. As many as 26% of owners have had their cat or dog professionally groomed in the last year, even if finances are tight, while 52% have bought them a gift of some sort.

Pet Insurance is another common way that owners look out for their pets, just in case the worst happens.
