Little Chef to axe up to 600 jobs
Thursday January 12th 2012
Up to 600 people could lose their jobs after Little Chef announced plans to close almost 70 restaurants.
The roadside chain said 67 of its 161 sites would be closed due to unprofitable trading.
The move is expected to lead to the loss of between 500 and 600 full and part-time jobs.
Little Chef said "a variety of economic and locational factors" had forced it to earmark several sites for closure, a decision which it insisted it had not taken lightly.
The remaining Little Chef sites, which employ around 1,500 people, are all trading profitably, the group added.
Little Chef previously fell into administration in 2007 but had its fortunes saved by turnaround group RCapital.
More than 3,500 jobs were rescued when RCapital bought the majority of the business and assets, saving 193 of 235 restaurants.
A year later, a show on Channel 4 saw Michelin-starred chef Heston Blumenthal revamp several of the group's restaurants.
Little Chef said the decision to close 67 sites would allow it to revamp more branches and target new areas for expansion.
