Kick boxer suffers shattered pelvis

Tuesday June 26th 2012

A former England kick boxer had to give up the sport after shattering his pelvis as well as dislocating and fracturing his hip socket when a trench collapsed.

Zak Davis, 36, from Lincolnshire, needed 10 hours of surgery and has not yet returned to work since the incident. But his time as a kick boxer is over.

He was laying drain pipes at a small housing development off Wragby Road, Bardney, before he was injured on August 4, 2011.

After a day of heavy rain, Mr Davis was laying the pipes in a trench being dug by an excavator.

But as the walls began to crack he was hit by falling material, which included a large piece of concrete, and was pinned down by his legs as he was buried up to his waist.

A subsequent investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that Phil Watson Civil Engineering Ltd, Nottinghamshire, had failed to assess the ground conditions and the effect the rain would have.

Inspectors also found that the firm had failed to introduce measures that would have prevented the trench from collapsing.

The company admitted breaching Regulation 31(1) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 and picked up a £10,000 fine with £2,141 costs at Lincoln Magistrates.
