Joy for fat cat which loses pounds

Friday January 29th 2010

With the issue of banker's bonuses still attracting the major headlines, the story of just one singular fat cat is far more heart warming.

Amber the cat's owners must be considering taking out a pet insurance policy, after she was crowned pet slimming champion of the year by an animal welfare charity, having shed more than two pounds.

The fit feline weighed more than 60% over her ideal weight when the scales recorded her at 15.7lbs (7.1kgs) at the start of the challenge in September.

The 12-year-old from Edinburgh, who was put on a veterinary-controlled diet as part of the PDSA's annual Pet Fit Club competition, has since lost 2.6lbs (1.2kg).

Elaine Pendlebury, PDSA senior veterinary surgeon, said: "It is much harder for cats to lose weight than dogs.

"The process has to be done very carefully under close veterinary supervision as too rapid a weight-loss can be dangerous."

Amber's owner Penny Faulkner, 26, nominated her for the fat-fighting competition shortly after adopting the moggy from a rescue centre in July last year.

She said she was delighted with the progress of her cat, who once had a habit of secretly raiding the fridge to feast on cheese and smoked salmon.
