Jobs under threat at drink supplier

Thursday October 4th 2012

One of Britain's biggest beverage firms has gone into administration, putting roughly 830 jobs at risk.

WaverleyTBS, which supplies alcoholic and soft beverages to companies such as Thorpe Park and Madame Tussauds owner Merlin Entertainments, has had to call in administrators Deloitte to try and settle debts.

Deloitte said talks with various potential buyers for Waverley are ongoing and that in the meantime the company is still trading.

This latest news comes after private equity firm Manfield Partners purchased the company from Heineken two years ago with an eye on improving decreasing sales.

Waverley is not the only company to go into administration this week, as 2,200 jobs at sports retailer JJB Sports were cut on Monday as it called in the creditors.

Heineken bought Waverley in a partnership deal with Carlsberg when it was the wholesale section of Scottish & Newcastle in 2008

A difficult pub and restaurant market in which customers are spending less was cited as the main reason behind the problems at Waverley.
