Farmer using sheepdogs to herd ducks
Tuesday August 4th 2015
A Welsh farmer is flying high with his dog and duck display team, known as the Quack Pack.
Meirion Owen, 53, decided to use his sheepdogs to herd farmyard birds rather than sheep when asked to put on a display to promote the breed over two decades ago - and he has not looked back since.
The light-bulb moment has helped to keep farming alive in his family, plus brought in a steady pay cheque.
It appears there is big demand for the unusual sight of collies herding poultry, with Mr Owen taking more than 130 bookings a year from festival organisers and corporate firms to people planning weddings.
The father of one, who lives in Rhos Yr Hafod, Carmarthenshire, with wife Glenda, has been blown away by the success of his intelligent dogs, which can get a flock of Indian runner ducks to go through all sorts of obstacles.
The Quack Pack wowed the crowds at last month's Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells, while they have previously put on shows at Blenheim Palace and Earls Court, plus made an appearance on BBC's The One Show.
