Experts decipher meaning of meow

Friday April 17th 2015

Cats are very independent - and mysterious - creatures, so it can be hard to figure out what they really want.

But do not fret - experts claim to have finally decoded what every meow, blink and tail wag means.

An extended tail is the equivalent of a human handshake, according to Dr Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, while a slow blink is like a wink between friends.

His new book for National Geographic, titled How To Speak Cat, aims to help cat owners understand what their felines are trying to convey, whether it is a plea for more food or a demand to be let outside.

It reveals that cats can make 16 different meow sounds, which they usually only use around people rather than with other cats. This is because they know they can get something desirable from people if they meow.
