Dog claims longest tongue record

Friday September 17th 2010

An unusual looking dog who was abandoned by his first owners has become a world record-breaker.

Puggy, the Pekingese, secured a spot in the Guinness World Records 2011 for having the longest tongue of any dog.

The 10-year-old animal licked the competition after judges discovered that his tongue was almost as long as his body at 4.5in (11.43cm) long. But Puggy's looks have not always brought him luck.

His owners, from Texas, United States, spoke of their delight for Puggy, who was abandoned and left a stray after he was discarded by his previous owner because of his looks.

Current owner Becky Stanford said: "People who meet Puggy for the first time do a lot of double takes; they are in total disbelief and are amused by his unique appearance.

"It means a great deal to us that he has accomplished what he has. From being a stray dog, being dumped, to being a Guinness World Record Holder is just phenomenal. I just can't believe it."
