Dame Judi battles poor eyesight

Tuesday February 21st 2012

Dame Judi Dench has revealed that her worsening eyesight means that she can longer read her scripts or see the faces in front of her.

The Bafta award-winning star recently revealed that she had been diagnosed with macular degeneration, a condition which can often lead to blindness. Macular degeneration affects the back of the eye and is most commonly found in people over 50.

Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the principal cause of sight loss, and in the UK AMD is responsible for more than 50% of the registrations for blind or partially sighted people.

Treatment for the condition, which is either "dry" or "wet", focuses on the macula which controls central sight.

Although Dame Judi said the progressive decline of her eyesight made reading difficult she also told the Daily Mirror that she is getting used to living with it.

She said: "I had wet in one eye and dry in the other and they had to do these injections and I think it's arrested it. But you get used to it and I've got lenses and glasses and very bright light helps."
