Daily Mail publisher cuts 188 jobs

Monday March 28th 2011

The Daily Mail and General Trust, the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, revealed it has made almost 200 new job cuts in its newspaper publishing division as it attempts to offset the effect of declining regional sales.

The trust confirmed that it reduced its workforce in its national and regional newspaper section by 188 in January and February, taking the total number of job losses to 520 in the five months to the end of February.

Its Northcliffe Media arm, which includes approximately 100 regional newspaper titles, was hardest hit with 317 job losses as revenues from circulation and advertising decreased 3% and 8% respectively during the five-month period.

Although group underlying revenues were up 5% thanks largely to a strong performance within its business-to-business arm, the company said it remained cautious over the outlook for its newspaper business.
