Coach grateful for help with injury

Friday February 17th 2012

A Blackpool football coach who suffered a nasty injury has credited hospital physiotherapists with helping him make a speedy recovery.

Nick Cunliffe, 37, runs Blackpool Football Club's Kickz training scheme but was left with a torn Achilles tendon after injuring his foot while coaching a football course. The injury would have required surgery were it not for the excellent work of the physiotherapy department at Clifton Hospital.

Nick received five weeks of rehabilitation, which included a range of different treatments to build up the strength in his damaged tendon. He credited the team at the hospital with helping him get back on his feet and out onto the pitch as both his career and social life revolve around his coaching work.

The Kickz scheme takes football coaches into deprived areas to provide free football sessions for children aged 12 to 18.

Nick said: "Without having access to this great service, my injury would have got extremely worse and would have needed surgery which may have left me sat on the football bench for a very long time."
