Capello awaits Barry injury news

Tuesday May 25th 2010

Steven Gerrard has helped allay some of Fabio Capello's fears about England's midfield line-up as the manager waits anxiously for news on Gareth Barry's injury.

Capello praised Gerrard's performance in Monday's pre-World Cup clash with a talented Mexico side that caused problems for England throughout by starving the home side of possession and attacking at speed.

England's midfield has been a conundrum that many fans see as the main challenge for the manager, with Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry failing to gel and emulate their club form at international level.

However, the job of selecting the midfield to travel to South Africa may become simpler when news finally arrives of the severity of Barry's ankle injury.

But Capello was happy to see the Liverpool talisman shine in both attacking and defensive roles in a challenging friendly against Mexico.

"Gerrard can play in midfield with Frank Lampard but we have to wait and see which players will be fit," said Capello.

"I changed it after half-time and put Steven in the middle, where he played very well.

"He is a really good player and can play in midfield, as a number 10, in lots of different positions."
