Border terrier wins top dog title
Tuesday November 9th 2010
Helen Grant MP has claimed yet another victory, as the Tories made a clean sweep of an election with a difference.
Charlie, a border collie owned by the MP for Maidstone and the Weald, was crowned Westminster Dog of the Year, beating off competition from 10 rivals, including a miniature dachshund and a Newfoundland.
Dogs owned by Conservative parliamentarians claimed the three top spots in the keenly fought contest.
The runner-up trophy went to Lola, a standard poodle belonging to Jake Berry, MP for Rossendale and Darwen, and the third place was taken by Dido, a lurcher owned by Castle Point MP Rebecca Harris.
Judges handed the top prize to Charlie for his support of Ms Grant during her election campaign in Maidstone and the Weald, the former seat of Ann Widdecombe. He also took part in a protest against plans to downgrade maternity services in the constituency.
Ms Grant said: "He'll celebrate his victory with a juicy bone this evening."
Clarissa Baldwin, chief executive of the Dogs Trust, stated: "I think Helen will keep dog issues and dog welfare on the political agenda."
