Battersea pets named after Team GB
Tuesday August 7th 2012
Homeless dogs and cats are being named after Great Britain's victorious Olympic athletes at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.
"We're all immensely proud to support Team GB, and naming some of our dogs and cats after these sporting heroes is our way of celebrating their achievements - and hopefully finding our animals new homes, too," explained Battersea operations manager Claire Porteous.
The latest addition is a young staffie named Ben after the gold medal-winning sailor Ben Ainslie who has entered the history books at London 2012 as the most decorated Olympic sailor in history.
Staffie Ben came into the home as a stray and it is hoped some of his namesake's glory will rub off so that he can enjoy a change in fortunes.
Other animals at Battersea named after Team GB's winning athletes include staffies Mo (10,000m winner Mo Farah) and Jessica (heptathlete Jessica Ennis); Golden Retriever Rutherford (long jumper Greg Rutherford); and tabby and tortoiseshell cats Sophie and Kat (rowers Sophie Hosking and Katherine Copeland).
