550 Royal Mail jobs under threat
Thursday July 14th 2011
Some 550 Royal Mail jobs could be lost if it goes ahead with plans to close its processing centre in Leicester.
Currently some 17,500 people are employed by Royal Mail in the Midlands.
The company is now in consultation with union members over plans to close its site in Leicester and to stop processing mail at its centres in Derby and Worcester. These would remain open as delivery offices.
The move would see some 550 jobs lost in the Midlands.
In a statement Royal Mail said: "These formal proposals are part of one of the most important change management programmes ever undertaken in the UK."
Since 2007 Royal Mail has closed 12 centres across the UK.
