450 jobs to go at medications plant

Thursday March 15th 2012

A North East pharmaceutical factory is due to close with 450 job losses.

The factory in Fawdon, Newcastle, which manufactures solid dose oral medications, is to close in 2015, said French-based pharmaceutical firm Sanofi

The company, specialising in vaccine development and diabetes treatments, said the plan took into account a difficult economic climate and a "challenging pharmaceutical market in Europe".

Products emerging from the Fawdon plant, which go mainly to the UK and Europe, were badly hit by factors such as competition, which led to a drop in demand and production volumes, said the firm in a statement.

Sanofi employs around 1,800 staff in the UK, including 300 at its base in this country at Guildford.
