140,000 council jobs 'under threat'

Wednesday January 26th 2011

More than 140,000 jobs are under threat at councils in Britain as a result of Government spending cuts, a new study has revealed.

In 2010 the Local Government Association warned that around 140,000 could be at risk at local authorities, but the GMB union said this figure has already been passed.

The GMB revealed that 203 councils had issued official redundancy warnings after the Government slashed their budgets.

It might be prudent for council workers to take steps including Income Protection insurance to offer some piece of mind ahead of the job cuts.

A majority of the councils in the study had set out a 90-day statutory consultation warning over job, GMB revealed.

Councils are planning to delete vacant posts and looking for volunteers to take up early retirement and redundancy, GMB officials said.

Paul Kenny, GMB general secretary, said: "The Government is deliberately creating unemployment on a scale that we have not seen before. As a direct consequence of the Government spending plans, the cumulative number of job losses is 140,456 for 203 authorities in Britain. To that total has to be added the job losses in the rest of the public sector."
