New Airbus deal protects 9,000 jobs

Monday December 17th 2012

Around 9,000 British jobs will be protected as part of a major new contract announced by aircraft maker Airbus.

On a visit to the company's base, Prime Minister David Cameron hailed the new deal, an order for 100 aircraft from AirAsia, and said it was a clear vote of confidence in the aerospace sector in the UK.

The jobs boost for Airbus workers followed shortly after latest figures revealed the largest quarterly fall in unemployment for 10 years.

The Airbus deal will see 1,500 jobs at the company protected, together with a further 7,500 in the supply chain.

According to Government statistics, the number of unemployed people in the UK fell by 82,000 in the three month period to the end of October. The figure now stands at 2.51 million, decrease of 128,000 compared to the same time last year, and the biggest fall since the spring of 2001.

Employment jumped by 40,000 to 29.6 million, the highest figure since records began in 1971 and up by half a million on a year ago.

The data showed the number of workers in the public sector has continued to slump, showing the importance of taking out Income Protection cover.
